Note to International Students: These scholarships differ from the scholarships JASSO provides to international students, and are intended for domestic (Japanese) university students, but are presented here for your information. For information about JASSO scholarships for international students, see here.   Type 1（interest-free loan） Type 2（interest-bearing loan） Application Period and Method 1. Regular Recruitment An information session is held in early April to explain how to apply. Applicants must attend the briefing and submit the application by the deadline. 2. Urgent & Emergency Recruitment Students whose family finances have suddenly changed due to unemployment, bankruptcy, accident, illness, death, etc., or due to a natural disaster such as an earthquake, fire, windstorm, flood, etc., may be recruited on an emergency basis. Applications can be made at any time, so please contact the Student Affairs Center for more information. (However, applicable students may only apply within one year after the event which caused their emergency.) Eligibility Students with outstanding character and academic achievement who have significant difficulty in studying for financial reasons. Students with very good character and academic achievement who have significant difficulty in studying for financial reasons. Personal Character Requirements Applicants are expected to demonstrate excellent attitude and behavior throughout their studies and extracurricular activities, and should demonstrate the the desire to act as an upstanding member of society in the future. Health Requirements Applicants must be deemed in good health and able to complete their course of study (based on a medical examination conducted in April) Academic Performance Requirements 【First-year students】 A grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the last two years of high school. 【First-year students】 Above average academic performance during the last two years of high school. 【Second-year students and up】 Ranked within top third of their Faculty&＃39;s class for the previous academic year. 【Second-year students and up】 Ranked above average in their Faculty&＃39;s class for the previous academic year. Family Finances The annual income and of the student&＃39;s household head, minus any special deductions specified in the regulations (depending on family structure, family circumstances, etc.), shall be less than or equal to the income threshold established by the Association. Selection Method Candidates who meet the criteria for recommendation will be selected and recommended to the Assocation after a comprehensive screening of character traits, health, academic performance, and family finances, after which the Association will select recipients for the scholarship. Please note that even if a candidate meets the criteria, they may not be selected due to budget constraints. Issuance of Scholarship Student Certificate Successful candidates will receive a "Scholarship Certificate" and as well as a brochure, and must then undergo a briefing on the various procedures they are expected to follow after their selection. Post-acceptance Procedures 【Recognition of eligibility】 Successful candidates must receive a notice of their scholarship loan amount each fall and submit a "Scholarship Renewal Application" via the Internet. 【Circumstances concerning poor behavior, etc.】 Students who are expelled or suspended from their school according to their school&＃39;s rules, or who are deemed ineligible for a scholarship due to poor academic performance, will have their JASSO scholarship discontinued or suspended. Repayment When this scholarship is terminated due to graduation, etc., the student must submit a repayment pledge and repay JASSO via monthly installments. Starting in 2010, new graduates are required to submit a repayment pledge form they are hired by their first employer, and failure to submit this repayment pledge can lead to a retraction of their job offer. Failure to repay the scholarship will result in a late fee at the rate of 5% per year. If a student remains enrolled in school (or continues on to higher education) after the end of their scholarship, or if the student becomes unable to repay the scholarship due to unavoidable circumstances during the repayment of their scholarship, the repayment period may be postponed via a formal request.
