With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the accompanying sharp decline in central government support and a significant reduction in agricultural and industrial production, economic conditions in those areas worsened, and the social decline of the population progressed at a rapid pace. At present, however, the redevelopment of the Far East is one of the highest priorities of the government of the Russian Federation from both a geopolitical and socioeconomic perspective. Geographically, the Russian Far East is close to Japan and has the potential to play a role in the food security of our country. Russian soybeans at present are inferior to typical soybeans imported from countries such as the United States, Canada and China in terms of variety suitability from a climate and pest resistance perspective, cultivation methods, post-harvest processing, and logistics and port facilities. Establishing the Russian Far East as an export hub by improving standards in these aspects is also perceived as an urgent issue for the government of the Russian Federation. With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries since 2014, the project leader has played a leading role in the trial cultivation of Russian soybeans in Russia’s Primorsky Krai, where the project has been comparing Russian methods, Japanese methods and deep placement fertilization methods with a view to diversifying sources of non-genetically modified edible soybeans demanded by Japanese consumers as well as diversifying risk and improving yield and quality. From the era of the Soviet Union until the present, soybean breeding has been aimed at oil extraction. Consequently, the majority of varieties have low protein and high lipid content but some varieties have been recognized as being suitable for producing tofu and miso. This project is an international joint research pilot project with research institutes in the Russian Far East and its objectives are to: 1) search for and investigate varieties resistant to the outbreak of soybean diseases, 2) elucidate the carbon and nitrogen accumulation in Russian soybeans, and 3) develop high-speed deep-placement fertilizer applicator suitable for large-scale farming.
